Balance is an extremely important component relative to the execution of a biomechanically efficient golf swing. The ability to maintain the proper postural positions, sequence phases of the swing correctly, and generate speed are contingent upon the ability of the golfer to balance the body throughout the entire golf swing. A golfer who is lacking the balance components to effectively execute the golf swing can benefit from the inclusion of golf fitness exercises geared towards the development of ones balance capacities. Prior to the demonstration of a golf specific balance exercise, let us define balance and the benefits this type of training can have on the execution of an efficient golf swing. Balance is defined as the ability of the neuromuscular system (nervous and muscular systems) to maintain proper alignment, center of gravity, and coordination of the body during athletic activities (Gray Cook, Athletic Body in Balance, 34) A golfer who lacks balance will often struggle with the golf swing, simply because they are unable to execute the movements of the golf swing correctly. The implementation of golf exercises geared around developing the balance capacities can result in a transfer of training effect which benefits the golfer in the execution of the golf swing. One such golf fitness exercise which is very beneficial in the developing the balance capacities of the body cross-specifically to the swing is the Address Position Single Leg Rotation. To perform the Address Position Single Leg Rotation stand upright and place your body in a proper address position, knees slightly bent, fixed spine angle, and arms crossed over your chest. Raise the right foot slightly off the floor while maintaining your address position and fixed spine angle. Begin to slowly rotate your shoulders to the right to the point of a complete shoulder turn. Return to the starting position of the exercise and repeat for 10-15 repetitions maintaining balance on the left foot. Repeat the exercise balancing on the left foot. The utilization of golf fitness exercises can improve the balance capacities of the body relative to the golf swing. This type of training over time will provide the golfer with a greater opportunity to maintain the proper postural positions of the golf swing, execute each phase of the swing more efficiently, and generate more speed. |
